De tilbyr seks til åtte ukers betalt arbeid, relevant arbeidserfaring, et faglig og sosialt nettverk, samt innsikt i industrien. Cæcilie Benckendorff has joined the department as an ERASMUS+ traineeship student on exchange from the University of Aberdeen. She will be working toward a MChem degree until the end of April, and will work on the synthesis of riboswitch ligands together with Illimar, Zeeshan and Bengt Erik. She will be associated with the project Chartering chemical space of riboswitch ligands – toward future antibiotics which is a collaboration with Professor Ruth Brenk at the Department of Biomedicine at UiB.
All the books, papers, conference contributions (talks, posters) etc that you published during 2017 need to be registered in the Cristin database. Cristin is the database that is used to compute the publishing part of our funding for coming 2019. It is a very good idea to register an item in Cristin as soon as the bibliographic information (volume, page number etc) is official – this way it becomes searchable in Cristin and thus your web site as soon as possible. In any case, please take a second look and include everything that has not been registered yet. At present, we have 50 entries in the Cristin database for 2017 and close-to 70 entries in the paper gallery — clearly we have a way to go.
NB! The deadline for registering your scientific production for 2017 is January 31!
Forskere ved MatNat-fakultetet inviteres til skrivekurs på tirsdag 20.mars fra 9.00-16.00. Målet er å sette deltakerne i stand å skrive kronikk eller populærvitenskapelig tekst for avis, blad eller nettsteder som forskning.no. Kursledere er redaktør Nina Kristiansen og kronikkansvarlig Eivind Lauritsen ved Forskning.no.
Ingen kursavtilgift. Det er ønskelig at deltakelsen speiler hele fakultetet.
Alle deltakere må på forhånd sende inn et utkast til kronikk, som vil bli gjennomgått i løpet av kursdagen.

Vijayaragavan Elumalai disputerer fredag den 19. januar med avhandlingen “Novel Synthetic Methodology and Total Syntheses of Highly Functionalized Carbazoles and Benzo[c]cinnolines.” Doktorgradsarbeidet ble utført i Faggruppe for organisk syntese og legemiddelkjemi med professor Hans-René Bjørsvik som veileder.

Den tradisjonsrike Julelunsjen ved KI blei ei fin samlingsstund for tilsette, emeriti, pensjonistar og studentar, med rom for tilbake- og sideblikk, god mat og drøs, og nokre frampek. Takk til Bjarte, Solmaz, Milan, Jose, Frida, Helge og Unni, som stod for arrangementet, og til Kjersti for veggkunst!

Askøyværing og farmasøyt Ole-Johan Juvik disputerte i dag for ph.d.-graden med avhandlingen: «Characterization of bioactive natural products from edible, medicinal and toxic plants». Avhandlingen beskriver oppdagelse og karakterisering av ikke mindre enn 55 naturprodukter fra 7 planter fra 4 kontinenter, og for hele 12 av de 55 forbindelsene er dette første gang de er beskrevet i den vitenskaplige litteraturen. Hoved- og biveileder har vært hhv. professorene Torgils Fossen og Svein Haavik. Ole-Johan har vært ansatt som stipendiat ved Senter for Farmasi med arbeidssted hos oss. Vi gratulerer og ønsker familien god jul!

The departmental Christmas party — Julebord — is on a winning streak! Thanks to heroic effort from the NMR and didactics divisions, and Malgorzata and Mildrid in particular, drawing from the wisdom embodied in the eminent party guide prepared last year by Mali, and a generous turn-out of party-minded chemists, it is safe to declare the Julebord last Thursday a great success! IntegrerBar was carefully and appropriately decorated in the colors of the season. The eloquent Olav Audun greeted, entertained and guided each and one and Chemistry’s own seasonal choir – the Off-ke(y)tones – served great entertainment and cultural delicacies – matched in quality and diversity only by the marvellous food contributed by all the guests in this hotpot event! After even the sweet teeth among us had had our fill, chemistry’s own quizmaster Bjørn took the floor — great expectations were met with equal fun and excitement — congratulations to all groups getting the composition of aqua regia correct! According to Olav Audun, it takes three occurrences in a row to make a tradition. The last quiz question is obviously which division (faggruppe) gets the honour of turning the chemistry Julebord into a tradition?
