Biofuel replacing Coal in Power plants
The current feature story at the Faculty web site is about one of the many exciting projects that Tanja Barth and her research associates are involved in, aiming at using renewable bio resources for energy «production». The article, authored by Asbjørn Leirvåg, is hereby warmly recommended!
Our Faculty – an Environmental Trail Blazer
In April 2016, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences was certified as a “Miljøfyrtårn” (“Environmental Beacon”). The certification includes the departments, centers and the faculty administration. The certification was part of the fact that the University of Bergen, as the first of the major university in Norway, now became a “Miljøfyrtårn”.
Being an “Miljøfyrtårn” involves systematic work on environmental measures in everyday life. The organization must meet requirements and implement measures for a more environmentally friendly operation and a healthy working environment. To be certified as a “Miljøfyrtårn”, the faculty must meet a number of requirements within systematic HSE as well as requirements for waste, procurement, transport and energy. And all these requirements must be documented. We must also meet all the requirements necessary for a good HSE system. Being a “Miljøfyrtårn” commits us as an institution and as individual employees to make environmentally conscious choices in everyday life.

BTO-day today
After a few months with less regular interaction, we are reviving the pattern of BTO presence at the Dept of Chemistry on the first Tuesday of the month, from 12 o’clock and on. Victoria and Maja are to be found in the administration section, or possibly knocking on your door. You are more than welcome to make contact to either of them, to discuss your ongoing BTO issues or to air an idea!
Major review paper: Enzymes help bacteria evade host immunity
The Reuter group and their collaborators from University of Massachusetts (Amherst) and Boston College recently published an important review article in Chemical Reviews. The article was featured on the cover of the journal (picture). It summarises decades of research on an important class of enzymes secreted by bacteria. The article notably provides a paradigm for how to use a combined computational/experimental approach to study proteins that transiently interact with cell membranes. At the Dept. of Chemistry, we are proud and happy about this important contribution to the scientific literature and the way it presents our department — Congrats to the authors!
Velkomen, Karianne!!
Karianne Søreide er nylig tilsett ved Kjemisk Institutt. Ho vil mellom anna ha ansvar for ekspedisjonen ved instituttet og dei mange oppgåvene som følger med det. Austevollingen som er busett i Bergen, har ei mastergrad i medievitskap frå Universitetet i Bergen (2016). Ho har i tida etter studia opparbeida seg ein variert og allsidig arbeidserfaring frå blant anna servicebransjen, undervisning som lærarvikar, samt saksbehandling og rettleiing av regelverk igjennom Avdeling for pasientreiser i Helse Bergen.

Flott kjemi på Forsker Grand Prix
Kjemisk institutt har tradisjon for at våre flotte PhD-studentar brukar Forskningsdagene og spesielt Forsker Grand Prix som ein god plattform for å profilere faget og seg sjølv, og samstundes få ekstra opplæring og trening i populær forskningsformidling. 
I årets regionale finale som fann stad på torsdag, stillte Frida og Illimar med sterke bidrag som inneheldt både show og solide fagkunnskapar. Frida gjekk all-in med sin presentasjon av sølv-organiske sambindingar, og laga ein vakker sølvspegel (Tollens test på glukose) på scena.
Ho stillte i Ag-skimrande bukser som dommarpanelet hadde lagt merke til allereie frå Bybanen same morgon, og, uklart om dette vart utslagsgivande, så vart Frida plukka ut som dommarane sitt wild-card for andre avdeling. Der slo Frida til med ein overbevisande forteljing om vegen frå kjemisk syntese til ferdig farmasøytisk produkt, og ho blei belønna med sølv-plass (kva ellers?) og tur til Tromsø for deltaking i den nasjonale finalen! Bursdag på lab’en
Godt sosialt studiemiljø er noko som blir skapt kvar dag, og vi kan alle bidra!
Farmasistudentane på laboratoriekurset i Farm131 gav eit eksempel i så måte, når lab-frakken blei komplettert med festhatt i anledning Kamilla, deres medstudent, sin bursdag. I følge labass Beate, blei det bursdagssang og god stemning før fellesgjennomgangen av dagens øving!
FORSKER GRAND PRIX 2018
Også i år er Kjemisk institutt godt representert i Forsker Grand Prix når den lokale finalen går av stabelen i kveld, i Mimes brønn på Campus Kronstad, Høgskulen på Vestlandet. Dørene åpner kl. 18.00. Showet starter kl. 19.00.

Våre helter er Illimar Remand og Frida Johanne Lundevall, som begge er urolige over framveksten av multiresistente bakterier og opptatt av å finne nye antimikrobielle forbindelser til erstatning for dagens antibiotika. Mens Frida fokuserer på bruk av sølvholdige forbindelser, er Illimar opptatt av RNA-fragment med gen-regulatorisk funksjon. For meir bakgrunnstoff, sjå her. Møt opp i dag og heie på Frida og Illimar!
