Stemningsfull masterseremoni

På fredag arrangerte MN masterseremoni i fullpakka Aula, med ca 150 deltakande MSc-kandidatar. Etter fine taler og vakre kunstneriske innslag, mottok MSc-kandidatane, ein etter ein, ei rose og helsingsbrev frå vår dekan. Arrangementet kan anbefalast til veiledarar og studentar – det er plass til fleire kjemistudentar til neste år!

Påmeldingsfrist for Mastersermonien I DAG
Fakultetet har etablert en fin tradisjon for å feire studenter som har fullført/kommer til å fullføre en mastergrad ved fakultetet studieåret 2016/2017. Programmet inneholder høytidelig feiring av alle kandidatene, taler og et musikalsk innslag. Etter seremonien blir det enkel servering. Både kandidatene og deres veiledere ønskes varmt velkommen til mastersermoni i Universitetsaulaen fredag 2. juni kl. 14.00. Påmelding skjer her. Frist for påmelding er idag – så her er det viktig å handle! Fullstendig program blir sendt på e-post til alle påmeldte.
Oppstart byggearbeid på KI

Det skal bygges nytt ventilasjonsanlegg for 4 stk avtrekkskap til Kjemisk institutt. I den forbindelse må det legges kanaler fra 5te til 2dre etasje (akse 5G/F). I tillegg skal det gjøres mindre arbeider på eksisterende anlegg i 3 etg. for tilknytting av 3 stk punktavsug. Dette vil til tider forårsake støy. Hovedparten av støyende arbeider foregå utenfor undervisningstid (16:00 – 09:00 evt. i helger). Anleggsperiode: mai – september 2017.KFU goes North
A carefully selected group from our local chemistry student union, KFU, recently went on a study trip to NTNU (Trondheim) to get new ideas on how to develop their activities to the benefit of both bachelor and master students at the chemistry department. As the picture clearly shows and as they confirmed in the most recent Thursday lunch seminar, they were well received and got loads of inspiration and good ideas! The chemistry department would like to cheer on and support this important work and we all look forward to the new ideas turning into new activities!
nanoBergen Brain-storming session
Nano2021 is a nanoscience and -technology program funded by the Norwegian research council. The next upcoming application deadline is May 24, with 41 MNOK in the pot. Importantly, this call allows for researcher projects («Forskerprosjekt»), which does not require industry participation. The call is detailed here. 
On Tuesday 28, researchers from six different departments and institutions joined forces at the Department of Chemistry in a project-generation session within the nanoBergen network, with the purpose to establish local inter-institutional collaborations for the upcoming NANO2021 call as well as longer-term calls. Project ideas were presented that involve interesting nanoscience related to physics, chemistry and molecular biology, with downstream applications within e.g. technology, energy and medicine. In addition to the thrill of joining multidisciplinary scientific discussions, several concrete collaborations were established, inspiring similar meetings for future calls. Alexander presents his second book
Chemists have many talents, and former PhD-student at the chemistry department, Alexander Sandtorv, certainly fits the bill. This Saturday he is launching his second book. Different from the first one which was an introduction to chemistry, this time he has written a fantasy novel. You may join the party – see details here.
KjemiNytt.b anniversary today!
Today it is one year since the first posting on KjemiNytt.w.uib.no. The total number of posts has reached 122, approaching 3 postings per working week. The number of visitors is not bad but can afford growth. 
Interesting perspectives on BioFuel
T
he previously announced half-day seminar on the future of Norwegian biofuel featured a number of interesting talks, with highlights including economical perspectives by Gunnar Eskeland (NHH), the ongoing phasing-in of biofuel in the aviation industry (by the head of Avinor Flesland, Aslak Sverdrup), and research perspectives given by our own Tanja Barth, heavily supported by some of her team members (picture)!
One important take-home message is that Avinor aims to invest 100 MNOK in jet biofuels (2013-2022) and is very much interested in fruitful collaboration with academia and other stakeholders. The work programs for the last leg of Horizon2020 is about to be finalized, with the declaration of intent for renewable fuels for transport and bioenergy made available here. There is large demand for nice chemistry, and our NCP, Tor Ivar Eikaas, states that 60% of the total H2020-funding within this theme is saved for last three years (2018-20).
New instrumentation for Flow chemistry
January 16-17 will be days to remember for the Department of Chemistry. Modern instrumentation for flow synthesis was installed and a bunch of enthusiastic users from the section of Organic Synthesis and Medicinal Chemistry received training on the new system.
This installation represents a leap from equipment invented in the era of the alchemy (the glass flask) into modern computerized flow-chemistry instrumentation. It is a highly modular and versatile system composed by several feeding pumps, reactor manifolds and thus also various types of reactors. The control and monitoring program also allows combining in-house developed and third party equipment. The instrumentation is designed, produced and delivered by Vapourtec.
