In the faculty board meeting last Thursday, PhD Mali Husby Rosnes was appointed as Assistant Professor at our Department, with a temporary contract running until August 2020. 
Her teaching duties will primarily be within the study programs in nanoscience and -technology, and she will also have a coordinating function in the nanoBergen research network. She will be a member of the group in Inorganic nanochemistry and catalysis. We are truly happy to welcome Mali as faculty member!
Scientific writing is a major work in any research. All PhDs, postdocs, researchers and professors have to write manuscripts, proposals, books and much more. Gadi Rothenberg’s “Write it Right” course focuses on how to organize a manuscript to maximize its clarity and impact. Seven participants from our Department attended this two-day course held in Leiden (Holland) on September 6-7. They were asked to submit a two-page manuscript that was reviewed by the instructor and used as basis for exercises during the workshop. Each participant worked to improve his own manuscript and acted as peer reviewer for the others. The participants are very positive about the content and the trainer.

FORSKER GRAND PRIX 2017
Forsker Grand Prix er en formidlingskonkurranse der 10 forskere får fire minutter hver til å engasjere publikum og dommere. I år som i fjor er Kjemisk institutt godt representert — denne gang ved PhD-student Sondre!

Åsmund Kaupang har mastergrad i organisk kjemi fra Universitetet i Oslo og doktorgrad i farmasøytisk kjemi fra UiO i 2016. Han ansettes som forsker i organisk syntese og legemiddelkjemi finansiert av Norges forskningsråd. Han skal jobbe på prosjektet Novel drug candidates for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease treatment som ledes av Nathalie Reuter (Molekylærbiologisk institutt, UiB) og Bengt Erik Haug.
Som mange har registrert, startar UiB og MatNat opp tre teknologiske studium i haust, innan høvesvis Medisinsk teknologi, Energi og Havteknologi. I dag blei dette markert med gode og begeistra ord frå mange hald.
Studiet i medisinsk teknologi blir koordinert frå Kjemisk institutt, og Hans-René Bjørsvik har vore sentral i arbeidet med å utvikle studieprogrammet. Grunnemnet MTEK100 skal gå alt i haust. Her er Olav Kvalheim sentral i forhald til å koordinere og etablere hospiteringsplassar ved Haukeland Universitetssjukehus og UiB, medan Tarja Kvalheim (hovudarbeidsplass ved HelseFørde) er ansvarleg for førelesingar og kollokvium. Louise Emblem Bergsjø har mastergrad i kjemi fra UiB i 2016. 
Hun ansettes som stipendiat i organisk syntese og legemiddelkjemi knyttet til instituttets satsning innen medisinsk teknologi. Louise skal jobbe med syntese av peptid og peptidlignende forbindelser for anvendelse innen molekylær avbilding i et samarbeidsprosjekt med PET-senteret ved Haukeland universitetssjukehus. Bengt Erik Haug og Ole Heine Kvernenes (PET-senteret, HUS) er veiledere.
Muhammad Zeeshan har mastergrad i organisk kjemi fra Universitetet i Karachi og doktorgrad i organisk kjemi fra NTNU i 2012. 
Etter oppnådd PhD har han jobbet som forsker i organisk syntese ved NTNU og ved UiT. Han ansettes som postdoktor i organisk syntese og legemiddelkjemi finansiert av Norges forskningsråd. Han skal jobbe på prosjektet Chartering chemical space of riboswitch ligands – towards future antibiotics som ledes av Ruth Brenk (Institutt for biomedisin, UiB) og Bengt Erik Haug.
Hopefully you have all experienced an enjoyable summer vacation! This week we are receiving new and returning students in chemistry and pharmacy as well as to technology programs that include process and petroleum technology, nanotechnology, and for the first time ever, medical technology! Let us continue the proud tradition of the Chemistry Department in welcoming the students in a friendly, helpful and efficient manner!
