Join the Horizons lecture on Tuesday 4 pm
The Horizons series is a lecture series for staff and students of The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, and for all others that are interested in major scientific questions and/or challenges across disciplinary borders. You are hereby encouraged to spend an hour on Tuesday afternoon to learn about recent advances in the use of genomics to uncover our our distant history.
Eske Willerslev – Hunting the past with ancient genomics
How can ancient genomics be used to address questions of the deeper and more shallow past? Evolutionary geneticist Eske Willerslev will try to answer in the Horizon lecture. For more information, see here.

Digital Day for employees
All UiB employees are invited to participate in Digital Day in Grieghallen today, October 4th. There, UiB colleagues will present ongoing digitalization projects, tools and methods, and future digital solutions. 
The program consists of:
- 20 stands from UiB groups presenting their digitalisation work
- Talks from the stage (some in English)
- UiB projects displayed on screens
- Hands-on: tools and programs
Heldags NKS-seminar ”Klima- og miljøanalyser” I DAG
Norsk kjemisk selskap-faggruppe for analytisk kjemi (NKS-FAK) inviterer til seminar i dag kl 08.45, torsdag 14. september, på Institutt for Geovitenskap, Realfagbygget, Auditorium 4.
Programmet inneholder 9 foredrag som dekker grunnleggende temaer innen analytisk kjemi som for eksempel god veieteknikk og kvalitetssikring, med problemstillinger fra nanopartikler, algegifter, og luft/jord/vann. Analyse av både uorganiske og organiske parametere vil behandles. 6 firmaer vil ha utstilling og der vil være god anledning til å diskutere ulike problemstillinger med dem.
Interesting perspectives on BioFuel
T
he previously announced half-day seminar on the future of Norwegian biofuel featured a number of interesting talks, with highlights including economical perspectives by Gunnar Eskeland (NHH), the ongoing phasing-in of biofuel in the aviation industry (by the head of Avinor Flesland, Aslak Sverdrup), and research perspectives given by our own Tanja Barth, heavily supported by some of her team members (picture)!
One important take-home message is that Avinor aims to invest 100 MNOK in jet biofuels (2013-2022) and is very much interested in fruitful collaboration with academia and other stakeholders. The work programs for the last leg of Horizon2020 is about to be finalized, with the declaration of intent for renewable fuels for transport and bioenergy made available here. There is large demand for nice chemistry, and our NCP, Tor Ivar Eikaas, states that 60% of the total H2020-funding within this theme is saved for last three years (2018-20).

Room 3069 Time: Thursday, February 16th 2017, starting at 12:15 12:15-13:00: Introductory lecture: “High throughput solutions for Chemistry, Materials Research and Biologics Formulation Development” 13:00-13:15: Coffee break 13:15-14:00: Presentation and discussion of some specific case study examples from various fields of applications. In this session, the participants will have the opportunity to discuss with the speakers about technical solutions for specific needs and applications. The priority list of the specific topics would be organized according to the participants’ interests and requirements. 16. januar «Mitt UiB – nye muligheter for undervisning og vurdering» – et kjempenyttig temaseminar
Førstkommende mandag 16. januar kl 10.15 – 12.00 på Lille Auditorium, Høyteknologisenteret:
Antonella Zanna (Matematisk), Audrey Geffen (Bio) og Hans Flaaten (MOF) vil dele sine idéer og erfaringer med bruk av mulighetene i Mitt UiB for undervisning og vurdering.
Det første av en serie Mitt UiB – seminarer som MN vil arrangere for undervisere og studieadministrative. Dette første seminaret er åpent for alle som underviser, men vi inviterer spesielt med tanke på det pågående arbeidet med revisjon av studieprogram og emner.

Jubileumsseminar i Aulaen fredag kl 13-16 – Geofysen er 100 år
I 2017 er Geofysisk institutt 100 år. Jubileet blir feiret gjennom hele året på ulike måter og gjennom forskjellige arrangementer. Det første arrangementet – Jubileumsseminaret i Universitetets Aula er i morgen, fredag 6. januar og er åpent for alle. Seminaret er i to deler, og spesielt sesjon 2, om fornybar energi, vil være av stor interesse for mange på Kjemisk institutt.

Chemicals and fuels from catalytic conversion of lignin – opportunities and challenges?
This is the title that Camilla Løhre has been given for her trial lecture for the PhD degree. The lecture gives an introduction to the chemistry of catalytic conversion of lignin to high-value products for the biofuel- and chemical industry. Specifically it will address the current status of large-scale catalytic conversion of lignin and identify future perspectives.
