Flott kjemi på Forsker Grand Prix
Kjemisk institutt har tradisjon for at våre flotte PhD-studentar brukar Forskningsdagene og spesielt Forsker Grand Prix som ein god plattform for å profilere faget og seg sjølv, og samstundes få ekstra opplæring og trening i populær forskningsformidling. 
I årets regionale finale som fann stad på torsdag, stillte Frida og Illimar med sterke bidrag som inneheldt både show og solide fagkunnskapar. Frida gjekk all-in med sin presentasjon av sølv-organiske sambindingar, og laga ein vakker sølvspegel (Tollens test på glukose) på scena.
Ho stillte i Ag-skimrande bukser som dommarpanelet hadde lagt merke til allereie frå Bybanen same morgon, og, uklart om dette vart utslagsgivande, så vart Frida plukka ut som dommarane sitt wild-card for andre avdeling. Der slo Frida til med ein overbevisande forteljing om vegen frå kjemisk syntese til ferdig farmasøytisk produkt, og ho blei belønna med sølv-plass (kva ellers?) og tur til Tromsø for deltaking i den nasjonale finalen! Forskningsdagane er i gang: Plastic fantastic?
Plastic fantastic – eller en fremtid uten plast?

Plast forurenser havene og kysten vår, og folk strømmer til strender for å rydde plastsøppel. Det er politisk korrekt å støtte et forbud mot engangsplast. Men er det mulig å løse plastproblemet? Og er det ikke slik at vi trenger plasten, og at vi skaper nye miljøproblemer ved å bannlyse den? Hvilket ansvar har vi forbrukere? Og hva med mikroplast og nanoplast?

Meld deg på Landsmøtet i kjemi!
Norsk Kjemisk Selskap (NKS) inviterer alle interesserte til spennende kjemi-dager på Lillestrøm 16.-18. oktober.
Det 21. Landsmøte i Kjemi arrangeres i forbindelse med LAB ’18 på Norges Varemesse. Landsmøtet går over tre dager, med temaer innen analytisk kjemi, makromolekyl- og kolloidkjemi, organisk kjemi, kvantekjemi og modellering, uorganisk kjemi og materialkjemi, matkjemi, kjemiens historie, katalyse, kjemometri samt kjemiundervisning.
NKS runder 125 år i år og dette markeres med et omfattende plenarprogram med inviterte foredragsholdere. Industry Lecture og foredrag ved årets Guldberg-Waage medaljør inngår også i plenarprogrammet. Det vil bli en felles Bankett for deltakerne på kvelder 16. oktober.

Fun day at Kronstad
Yesterday, EXPO-2018 took place at the Kronstad Campus of Western Norway University of Applied Sciences (HVL). 
Some 700 freshly minted engineers and economists presented their bachelor projects, about 270 in total, by way of posters, stands and enthusiasm. 
The picture shows the award-winning «best stand in show», featuring extraction and quantitative analysis of parabenes in on-campus-brewed beer. Focussing on the chemical and biochemical engineers, lots of talent was evident — hopefully more than a few of them show up as MSc-students in our departement over the summer? EXPO is an annual event — something to consider visiting next June?
Invitation to the Leiv K. Sydnes Symposium
On the occasion of Professor Leiv K. Sydnes’s 70th birthday in July, colleagues and former students are organising a two-day symposium on May 15th-16th 2018, honouring his long-standing contribution to the Norwegian and international scientific community.

Invited speakers are Udo Brinker (State University of New York at Binghamton, USA), Janine Cossy (ESPCI Paris/CNRS/PSL Research University, France), Anita Maguire (University College Cork, Ireland), Trond Vidar Hansen (UiO), John Sigurd Mjøen Svendsen (UiT) and Magne O. Sydnes (UiS).
In addition to the invited lectures, there will be opportunities for poster presentations and short talks by the symposium participants.The symposium will take in the University Aula, 12:00-18:30 on May 15th and 09:00-13:00 on May 16th.

NMR-gruppa på nasjonal konferanse
7.-9. mars deltok NMR-gruppen med 5 MSc-studenter og vitenskapelig ansatte på NMR-konferansen MR2018 i Tromsø. Her ble ulike forskningsprosjekter presentert hvor bruk av væske- og fastfase-NMR samt MRI inngår sentralt. Med fullt program av spennende foredragsholdere fra flere land i Europa ble dette en svært lærerik tur. Hovedtalerne var Teodor Parella, Gerhard Wagner og Adam Espe Hansen.
MR2018 var en utrolig lærerik, men ikke minst gøyal konferanse hvor man fikk møte og skape nettverk med topp forskere innen eget fagområde. I tillegg fikk man nyte naturen på Sommarøya og se nordlys danse over himmelen. (Tekst: Merethe B.)

Busy Thursday – nano & NMR
This Thursday is a busy day for chemists. For those engaged in nanoscience and nanoscience-related research,
the full-day nanoBergen meeting at Hotel Scandic Neptun is a must. Starting at 8.30 am, the program presents an update on the diverse research activities in the network as well as information about and invitation to join new initiatives.
To celebrated the purchase and successful installation of a top-notch 600 MHz NMR spectrometer and to inspire to many future projects to be run on this platform, the regular Thursday lunch seminar is expanded into a session of three invited lectures, starting fashionably late at 1.15pm.
