(Tekst: Merethe B.)

PhD day at the MN Faculty- April 9 @ VilVite

A PhD survival camp

PhD life is full of questions. In which journal should I publish? What are the pitfalls when writing? How do I find funding for publishing fees? Do I need a data management plan? (Spoiler: Yes, you do!) Which data to include in one? How do I increase visibility of my work? How do I spot «junk» or «fake» science? Have I overlooked relevant literature?

The MN Library offers PhD candidates a seminar addressing these questions: April 10th, 9:00 -16:00,  Auditorium at VilVite

Tentative schedule:

How to find the literature you need (9:00 – 9:45)

Get access to the literature you want (9:45 – 10:00)

Data management plan (10:15 – 11:15)

  • Write a data management plan for your PhD project and EU or NFR proposals
  • Publish data together with your article
  • Archive your data for the future

Writing a research paper – a survival guide (11:15 – 12:15)

In this humorous presentation Bodil Holst takes you through some of the pitfalls and challenges of scientific paper writing.

Free Lunch 12:15 – 13:00

Publishing process and copyright (13:00 – 14:00)

How you get evaluated and what you can do to improve your impact (14:00-15:00)

Web of Science vs Google Scholar (15:00 – 15:30)

Wrap up  (15:30-15:45)

Mini seminar in organic synthesis

In connection with Vijay’s disputation on Friday, the two opponents give a two-talk seminar on Thursday January 18, in Tripletten.

14:00 Prof. Hans-Joachim Knölker, Dept. Chemistry, TU Dresden: Transition Metals in Heterocyclic Synthesis.

15:15 Prof. Trond Vidar Hansen, Dept. Pharmaceutical Chemistry, School of Pharmacy, UiO: Stereoselective Synthesis, Biosynthesis, Biological Activities and Applications of Specialized Pro-Resolving Lipid Mediators: Novel Leads in Drug Discovery.

Your attendance is welcome!

Busy Thursday – nano & NMR

This Thursday is a busy day for chemists. For those engaged in nanoscience and nanoscience-related research,

the full-day nanoBergen meeting at Hotel Scandic Neptun is a must. Starting at 8.30 am, the program presents an update on the diverse research activities in the network as well as information about and invitation to join new initiatives.

To celebrated the purchase and successful installation of a top-notch 600 MHz NMR spectrometer and to inspire to many future projects to be run on this platform, the regular Thursday lunch seminar is expanded into a session of three invited lectures, starting fashionably late at 1.15pm. The program is as follows:

Directly following the last talk, you are invited for a stroll down-hill for the grand opening and cutting of ribbons at NNP, in the good company of Rector Olsen, Dean Dahle and other distinguished guests.

Join the Horizons lecture on Tuesday 4 pm

The Horizons series is a lecture series for staff and students of The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, and for all others that are interested in major scientific questions and/or challenges across disciplinary borders. You are hereby encouraged to spend an hour on Tuesday afternoon to learn about recent advances in the use of genomics to uncover our our distant history.

Eske Willerslev – Hunting the past with ancient genomics

How can ancient genomics be used to address questions of the deeper and more shallow past? Evolutionary geneticist Eske Willerslev will try to answer in the Horizon lecture. For more information, see here.

Time and place: Tuesday Oct 31, 4 pm, at Auditorium 1, Realfagbygget

Invitasjon til miniseminar om prøveopparbeiding for LC-MS

Digital Day for employees

All UiB employees are invited to participate in Digital Day in Grieghallen today, October 4th. There, UiB colleagues will present ongoing digitalization projects, tools and methods, and future digital solutions. digital_myldredag_uibno

The program consists of:

  • 20 stands from UiB groups presenting their digitalisation work
  • Talks from the stage (some in English)
  • UiB projects displayed on screens
  • Hands-on: tools and programs

Interesting perspectives on BioFuel

Timg_0477he previously announced half-day seminar on the future of Norwegian biofuel featured a number of interesting talks, with highlights including economical perspectives by Gunnar Eskeland (NHH), the ongoing phasing-in of biofuel in the aviation industry (by the head of Avinor Flesland, Aslak Sverdrup), and research perspectives given by our own Tanja Barth, heavily supported by some of her team members (picture)!

One important take-home message is that Avinor aims to invest 100 MNOK in jet biofuels (2013-2022) and is very much interested in fruitful collaboration with academia and other stakeholders. The work programs for the last leg of Horizon2020 is about to be finalized, with the declaration of intent for renewable fuels for transport and bioenergy made available here. There is large demand for nice chemistry, and our NCP, Tor Ivar Eikaas, states that 60% of the total H2020-funding within this theme is saved for last three years (2018-20).
